Ugh, people making assumptions on my behalf is one of my biggest struggles.
When hiring managers believed a woman had children because “Parent-Teacher Association coordinator” appeared on her résumé, how much less likely was she to be hired?FACT: 79% less likely to be hired. (And if she was hired, she would be offered an average of $11,000 less in salary.)
Catherine from Detroit, MI! 2 year old son and a little girl due in August!
It hasn't changed, ugh!

Hi! I had twins in 2020 and I was working as a Recreation Supervisor. I was let go during the crazy start of the pandemic. I decided to try to be a SAHM for a year. Well, my year is up and I know I want to be a working mom. How I get back in the work field and write about this year off work to take care of my twins and toddler?
Hi everyone! Mom of 2 from NYC. A 5.5yo boy and a 2yo girl.
Mary Beth Ferrante
Corina - we’ve got you! We are going to dive into HOW to talk about your skills in the 2nd half of today’s event!
Thank you for sharing that Aya. Fellow fertility warrior here.
the norms set up from ones culture of what we have seen in our family and those around us..but like Cheldin said this is something internal to become a mother and how we want to continue in our careers. its scary when society limits us.
That’s so sad 😢 no one should have to hide such a happy experience.
the unwinnable feeling
Hello! I live in Miami, FL and have two daughters- ages 6 and 4.5 years old. I will never forget when my manager, a mother, told me I was taking too long to pump! I was devastated and felt I had no one to turn to! I realized that not all mothers are the same and prioritize the same things.
also something no one seems to realize is that babies are necessary for society to continue!
Hi everyone, been with Theory HQ in NYC in creative services for 13 years but launched a stationery & branding design business impressedinc.com in 2009 and an Etsy shop in 2020. Have a 3.5 yr old and 9 month old. So happy to have this group and experiences like this to help learn, and scale as an entrepreneur!
Greetings, what would be the best way to put it in writing? Or how should we write motherhood.
That’s amazing that you started 9 months pregnant!
I love Stuart Weitzman shoes, and now after hearing about the company values, I’m a next level fan.
Anyone know if this is being recorded and will be accessible later? I highly doubt I will be available through 5pm. Best guess is 4year old will be by 3:30/4 and I'll have to go...
It’s so nice to hear from ladies who are proud of being mothers — I recently lost some relationships/friendships because the deeper issue was looking down on me for being an involved mom
Yes this will be recorded mamas!
Hey mamas! I'm in Chicagoland, mama to two boys, 5 and 3, working in ecommerce digital marketing.
Hi wonderful information so far!I'm in Bergen County single mom of two girls going back to graduate school while working. Have encountered a lot of resistance from managers about flexibility during this pandemic.
I'm sorry to hear that Keerti! Many of my friends are artists and have chosen not to have kids. They are supportive of me even if they don't fully grasp what it means to be a mama and running the household and tryingn to work at the same time
Mary Beth Ferrante
Yes!! We need men to parent out loud too!
Hi! I live in San Francisco and have two daughters, 6 months and 2.5 yrs. I definitely feel judged as a mother and feel like a big bias is because hiring manager or managers don’t always know what it’s (motherhood) is like because they haven’t experienced it. It’s sort of like how we have more empathy for mothers after we’ve become a mother vs. prior to.
Women (particularly Mothers) are more likely than men to feel that they constantly have to defend their abilities and work hard to outperform in order to be given equal opportunities to advance and be given opportunities. Such differences are reinforced by the reality and perception that men are given opportunities based on their potential while women advance only after a documented proven track record that is endorsed by the many. We tend to underestimate women’s performance and overestimate men’s. This is performance bias.
Amen to that!
Women have really been hit hard; we need to keepSpeaking up.
Mary Beth Ferrante
Yes - great point Joan!
I don't want to generalize men/fathers but we tend to be the schedule keepers for everyone and everything that goes on in the home. It is serious! And I am happy and proud to do it but it IS a job. Keep it up mamas!
So true Joan-it's like we are placed with bias at the start.
Hey mamas! I'm based in Brooklyn, NY. Mama to two girls, 4 and 2, working as a digital content creator (@ariel.loves) and Jewish educator (@JewishFamilyMagic.) My husband also works full-time from home and I often think about the “emotional labor” and the “mental load” that I carry in our family.
I agree Joan - well said.
Yes to Joan! It is the unseen and unrecognized work.
Any mammas here in supply chain?
Exactly Leslie - And when I share the “potential vs performance” research with more working women they feel liberated to speak up and raise their hand earlier for opportunities because they DO have potential. And we need Managers/Leaders to recognize this double standard for women
Any healthcare mamas on here?
I went through PPD after my third, two years back and I think it was then that my husband truly realised the amount of emotional load and how exhausting that can be mentally (even though we may enjoy it), I hear you Ariel Stein.
@joan story of my life, only hired for jobs I've already done and not on potential, even when it's not that big of a stretch!
YES - “valuing mamas is valuing our time”
Oops I meant yes to Joan. And to Ariel the unseen and unrecognized work you do is so important.
Voice memos are my new thing! It’s so easy to misread messages.
Thank you @Nisreen and @Leslie! And YES to voice memos - I love them @Alicia!
I’m beyond wanting acknowledgement for all I do (although that’s definitely a start). I want workloads to shift and timelines to shift, especially from the employer. I realize to reach the American Dream that so many strive for…bigger, better, stronger, faster is what gets the recognition and rewarded, so it’s a major workplace culture shift that would need to happen (and unlikely to happen). I’ll probably end up moving to Italy, owning an olive grove, and living off the land with my husband and little babe.
Alicia - thats is a great actionable idea and I can think of MANY times that adding that voicemail saved a deal, friendship or opportunity
And people keep saying cold calling is dead. Um no, if you are in sales or any other role, cold calling/picking up the phone is the best thing you can do if you want to save time.
Leveraging motherhood instead of succeeding despite it! Love it, Erika!
YES! The patriarch sure doesn't want to hear any of this.HAHAHA! We are innately skilled to organize while empathizing and leading all at the same time.
@Ariel S - let’s turn it around starting today! From my experience, it has been a HUGE help to have an ally on the other side (male or female) to provide air cover for my “potential” and that gave me enough credibility to get in the door. This forum today could be those allies in so many industries if we all commit to sponsoring a mother’s potential
I'm with you Erikka. Motherhood and COVID have both really allowed me to see what truly matters and how we view and value success
I’m curious how to explain my furlough and lay off time that I had to become a “teacher” and mom time on my resume. Is that possible without being looked down on in traditional society?
Joan Kuhl - The stat you posted above is unreal! May I ask the source? Thank you!
@Kimberly - we will discuss that in Part 2 today! Also lots of great resources in the toolkit that will be sent out
Yes, Nisreen! I became a first time mom during the pandemic. My second trimester started when the world shut down. I came back from mat leave to an org and culture where I realized my values no longer aligned.
thanks, Leslie, for your kind words. That’s when I was like, it’s not me, damn, this person is not a friend
@Joan I love it, yes!
Amen!!! How lovely to put that in words ❤️
my Instagram handle is @VERBmom for exactly that reason
Yes we do need a break
That was beautifully said
Fellow Mama from Alexandria, VA with a 6yo son. Looking to get back into the workforce after being let go during the pandemic and administering virtual kindergarten. So excited to be a part of this chat, gain empowerment to help raise awareness and move my career forward.
YES BIG PC OF CHICKEN

we are so valuable, we are solo needed and we need to have confidence in our contribution. if I was an employer, I would SO value mothers. I feel they are so amazing
I love that! I always say every parenting I book should be read by everyone and that is how we should treat each other.
But also Lean In’s 50 Ways to Fight Bias are an incredible tool for personal education and leading team discussions
That is brilliant! There are so many organizations that need a mother!!!
My second turns one next month
Having a baby in a pandemic is NO JOKE
Extra clingy COVID babies
my first is 10 months
omg I can not relate with this anymore so thankful to have found this community
I feel like I am breathing finally my kid is 18 months
Being pregnant in the pandemic with a toddler at home and trying to work almost broke me!
I love this movement! Moms have to work twice as hard as everyone else! Let’s not shy away from it and legitimize our roles outside the work place. Also, this will help reshape the image of moms everywhere and help SAHM’s taking a career break help re-enter the workplace. Let’s do this & spread the word!
...and holding onto a marriage
support motherhood and even more importantly CELEBRATE it
100% Monica S
Totally Agree with you Leslie!
This is my second day back to work after MAT leave with my 2nd kid and this rings so true
Rising tide lifts all ships!!!!
and being rewarded for the extra skill sets we bring
Speak that Motherhood makes us warriors
So. Much. creativity
time management, conflict resolution, risk assessments, interpersonal skills, negotiation, effective communication, God so many things
like some days I would think, wow, I am a genius.
100% more confident in my power as a Woman. Less confident in my brain… hate to say that but I had to build it back. I can only say that now that I am several years in
yeeeeSSS!!! the creativity!
CDO’s chief decision maker
yes yes perspective is HUGE.
Great list, Cassandra!
Misasha Suzuki Graham
I love that! I always say that the ADR tools i employ with my boys are what i use as a lawyer, every single day
Big impostor syndrome! Doing my master’s thesis with very little support. It has been so hard but I’m doing this for my children. I want to be the mentor they need.
How did I manage to convince her that she does need to wear both shoes. why. Because you have to walk to the secret forest. Why? Because the secret forest has candy. And it’s called Starbucks.
Mom’s act with the Greater Good in mind - this benefits all
More men taking leave benefits everyone - that’s fantastic Anna that you are championing this at Ford
My husband had better paid leave than me :)
thank you so much ladies this has
What a great panel, thank you so much!
l been incredible
So excited for this portion to learn more about how to actually put motherhood on my resue!
Let’s do motherhood on the resume but parenthood should also be on the resume. Modern day fathers can be strong partners too! Will legitimize the whole movement! But LADIES FIRST! 💪
I AGREE LESLIE! The best way to level the playing field is to talk about it in that way…
Feeling more comfortable than I used to
Great point Leslie!
Vanesa Robles she/her
I just recently changed my job,..so THIs job is way different than before....at my pevious job I would NEVER talk about my kids smh...
My answer to this NOW is different than pre-pandemic
Same, before my current job it was terrible
I sometimes feel a little to vocal about my stresses but I work with all women, Mody other moms
more comfortable when i was working in a baby toy and product company, although i was afraid to mention my baby when interviewing
Felt comfortable and open to talk about it, but definitely impacted negatively in the background and what was offered to me
I do this now, even when my voice shakes, to show other working moms what is possible
most of my team doesn’t have children so it can be tricky sometimes reading the room
*mostly other moms. But the C level men do not understand
Wow 40% of us don’t proactively share about our families. I’d love to hear more of those stories
I have but it has impacted me negatively
I have mentioned my kids in an interview, but I didn’t get the job. Not sure if it was part of the decision or not
Definitely expressed a family oriented culture needed when interviewing
Vanesa Robles she/her
Again,..in my current job (I work with kids) its so much easier,..but in my previous role,..my go to answer was "I have a good support system" meaning yo don't have to worry about my personal life
i interviewed 9 months preggy! got the rejection email right after delivery
I have, and many places self-eliminated being the place for me
Wow Joanne, thank you for sharing that. It is definitely possible but I also find it frustrating how difficult it is for women to get specific feedback - on interview, promotions and day-to-day.
I interviewed and was hired and one week before I started I found out I was pregnant. I did not have paid leave but I thankfully had an understanding and supportive boss who high-fived me and welcomed me to the club and was wonderful throughout my pregnancy and with maternity leave even if it was unpaid.
Multi-tasking is not efficient. Plenty of research shows this. Let’s stop promoting this as a positive skillset that we possess. If we don’t, we’ll continue to dig our own graves.
Oh no Ariel that is crushing timing! And Vanessa, that point about “support system” is eye opening. Leslie, so good to hear the positive stories too
4 kids - people management all the way :-)
Long range planning!
Is lego building a skill? ;)
worst case scenario planning.
AGREED Erikka baker - multitasking is going to be the end of us all - it is not healthy
Lego building is totally a skill. Dexterity
I'm in the legal COMPLIANCE industry 😉😉😉😎😎😎
crisis mgmt & resilience - https://www.nbcnews.com/know-your-value/feature/fire-covid-19-pandemic-nearly-destroyed-my-business-here-s-ncna1252499
parenting is basically ALL compliance in some way
@Stefanie Schoen - I love that - Long range planning - I hadn’t thought of how crucial that one is
Mary Beth Ferrante
Yes!! All compliance!
coachability! haha with everyone giving you their advice (both wanted and unwanted)
Oh good one @Elizabeth I
Mary Beth Ferrante
Haha love that one!
This is so good
I love this so much!
Spreadsheets for ALL the holiday events, presents, budgets, etc.!
if you can show that you taught your children to be SELF-DRIVEN, I think that is so incredibly beneficial as a leader
Mary Beth Ferrante
And even if you didn’t have a full excel document and did this all in your head - it all is relevant!
Love the word stakeholders. It really elevates our family members as the key decision makers they are.
That was amazing, I appreciate you!
Ali, I feel like I just leveled up listening to this.
oh wow @Joan what an awful experience! i also had a fire in my apt (i had just gotten preggy), it was horrible. i can only imagine how much harder it was for you 💕 glad you got through it ok!
we have them. We just need to market them smarter. I think even the innovation of showing this, would show an employer a lot of creativity, usefulness and a different way of looking at things. If I was getting interviewed for a marketing role, I’d be impressed by just the positioning.
YES MAMA. All experience is experience!
This is awesome! ❤️
What position/title can I put as a stay at home mom? Domestic engineer?
I have to imagine there are women on here who are hiring managers and will also leverage this when recruiting women for open positions. Really valuable portion of the webinar today.
@Melinda — you are part of the c-suite! I consider myself Chief Operating Officer. The wheels would fall off if not for my leadership contributions.
@Melinda - there are lots of choices! You can add mother, mom, family manager, etc or you can use more descriptive words like "Event planner, coach, and people leader"
Thanks everyone for the ideas! I resigned from my role as a non profit director to relocate as a military spouse and become a new mom. Being a mom is definitely the most rewarding and demanding job ever!
When my husband was on sabbatical, he put CEO of the Mckenzie Family on his LinkedIn. Even though he’s more of the CFO… ☺️
I had put as my headline: OOO with Bebe Mateo
I’m currently take a year off from corporate life and as soon as I put in my resignation put CEO of the Shuraleff Household on LinkedIn. I get so many conversation starters about it!
‘Professional negotiator against tiny terrors’
I am a recruiter! I work with tech companies across the US to find sales and marketing candidates. If there are any job seeking moms here who would like to have a conversation, I would love to chat and help as best I can!
Yes, @VictoriaGraham, would love you chat!
…backwards and in heels!!
@victoriagraham, would love to connect!
YES, backwards and in feels @gina! Lol! Amen!
Love it, Megan!!!!
these are great! also had anyone hired a nanny?? we developed skills in that process, interviewing, etc!
@VictoriaGraham - would love to chat!
great point Ariel! hiring and managing nannies, housekeepers, and any other vendors for your home can be a great addition if it is relevant for you
Yes, @VictoriaGraham, would love to chat!
@Ariel S - first time last Jan. great point!
If there are any mamas who are interested in to tech sales- connect with me. We're putting together a couple of initiatives through my COMWUNE community: https://www.linkedin.com/in/elizabeth-ionita-974b4362/
